An Overview of My Past Writings

Over the past few weeks, I have been uploading my past reported articles, papers, and essays on Medium. I discovered that much of my work was relatively difficult to find online (or was not online in the first place), so I decided to make the effort to consolidate them all in one place.

I’ve consolidated 17 pieces, most of which were published by ThreeSixty Journalism when I was in high school, along with one article published by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, and a couple of previously unpublished writings. Above each article, I’ve included a brief note providing some context on the article such as when it was written.

My writing thus far fits into three broad categories: religion, politics, and sports with a strong local, Minnesotan focus. Below, I conveniently link a few of my favorite examples in each category.

Religion

  • A profile on Urban Jerusalem, a church in North Minneapolis, using hip-hop as a tool to draw the youth to spirituality.
  • A personal essay on a negative, post-9/11 experience I had as a practicing Sikh.
  • A two part article (part 1 and part 2) about the eternally celebrated Bhai Kanhaiya Ji.
  • A life story of Sant Teja Singh Ji Mastuana and Baru Sahib Wale.

Sports

  • A profile of Rashad Vaughn, currently a professional basketball player, when he was in high school.
  • A profile of Clyde Doepner, the Minnesota Twins historian.
  • A Q&A piece on Seimone Augustus, focused on her experience as a high schooler and as an openly gay professional athlete.
  • A Q&A piece with retired NBA legend Trent Tucker on the balance between academics and athletics.
  • A personal reflection on America’s (and my own) obsession with sports.
  • An unpublished essay I wrote, arguing that the Washington Football Team should change their previously held name six years before they finally did so.

Politics

  • A preview of the 2012 presidential election from the perspective of a Republican activist.
  • A recap of a fundraiser against the 2012 Minnesota Marriage Amendment headlined by former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe.
  • A story about the experiences and identity issues of mixed race teens.

Some additional writings that don’t fit neatly into any of the above categories are an unpublished (somewhat technical) paper I wrote on applications of data science to the environmental sciences, a story on the day-to-day job of a promotions manger for the Saint Paul Saints, and a story on the efforts of local figures like retired judge and NFL legend Alan Page to make college more accessible. Also, you can find my lengthy undergraduate senior paper on prime numbers here.

Most of the articles I’ve uploaded are reported pieces, but there are a few opinion essays where it is possible that my opinion has evolved since those were written. In the future, I hope to add to this collection with more in-depth writing on topics of interest to me.

As always, a big thanks to all of those who have helped me with my writing including, but not limited to, my editors at ThreeSixty, my teachers and professors, and my family.
